KOZHIKODE: Before he left an indelible mark in the Malayalam movie industry with his innovative directorial style, I V Sasi had spent his days toiling in Chennai to make it big.In fact, it was a question posed by actor Sathyan to a young Sasi, then working as an intern at a photo studio in Kozhikode, which made the future director come to Chennai in the first place. Sathyan, who was with actor Nellikode Bhaskaran at the studio, asked Sasi, “Would you like to work in films? Then come to Madras (Chennai).”
Unbeknownst to Sathyan, his words immensely impacted Sasi who eventually decided to move to Chennai. “He was totally excited by Sathyan’s statement and immediately decided to leave for Madras,” recalled Sasi’s younger brother and CPI leader I V Sasankan.
“Sasi was extremely good at drawing, singing and sports during his school days. He had an immense interest in photography. To learn photography, he started working at Pethambar studio in Kozhikode,” Sasankan said. “Though he initially got a chance to work in a few films, he struggled a lot because he had no money. The family had to send money to support him.
He later started working for a few magazines as an illustrator to meet his daily expenses,” Sasankan said, adding the entire family stood by Sasi when he decided to marry actor Seema. It was during his youth, when Sasi watched movies at ‘Venus’ theatre near his ancestral house at Athanikkal in Kozhikode, that he became interested in films.
